While more and more people are getting their COVID-19 vaccines (including me this week with my second shot), it seems that donning a mask will not be going away anytime soon. That’s why I decided to team up with my friends from Fashion Flash on their #StyleYourMask and Beauty-full giveaway campaign.*
As part of the program, Fashion Flash is partnering with Dr. Schachter of Mount Sinai Hospital to promote the importance of mask wearing. Neil Schachter, M.D., is professor of pulmonary medicine at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine and director of the hospital’s COPD Program. He has published 400 articles and six books, including his latest edition of The Good Doctor’s Guide to Colds & Flu, which features a new 9000 word chapter about COVID-19.
Dr. Schachter has served as president of the American Lung Association of New York and is donating 100% of his book earnings to patient advocacy organizations. The book is available on Amazon as an e-book and the 2021 paperback will be released in September.
The latest edition of Dr. Schachter’s book includes a section on COVID-19
Dr. Schachter’s “Four Ws” defense against COVID-19
Dr. Schachter says that “the best defense against COVID-19 is a strong offense” and tells his patients to follow the four Ws which are:
♥ Wear a mask over both nose and mouth.
♥ Wash your hands frequently and/or use hand sanitizer.
♥ Watch your social distancing (e.g. stay six feet apart in public places).
♥ Wipe down shared surfaces including doorknobs, light switches, and bathroom fixtures.
Regarding masks, he adds: “It’s hard to overstate the importance of wearing a mask. A study supported by the FDA found that if 80 percent of people wore face masks, it would virtually eliminate transmission of influenza. A related study published in Science determined that facial masks can cut COVID-19 infection by 65 percent, but only if they are worn properly. You need to wear a mask over both your nose and mouth. Just covering your mouth does not provide protection to you and is a disservice to those around you.”
How to #styleyourmask like a fashionista
I wore the houndstooth mask with my pink heather knit blazer
“I like your pink mask. You are so coordinated with your outfit” said the real estate agent in Florida last month. I was wearing my pink mask with a black tee and pink cap. Since retiring I don’t dress up as much, but I guess once a fashionista, always a fashionista.
When the Fashion Flash team asked me to dress up for the #styleyourmask campaign, I obliged. On Sunday, I matched the houndstooth mask they sent with my J.Crew heather pink cotton knit blazer and tee. The next day I paired the camouflage mask with a J.Crew olive cotton knit blazer and black tee.
JudiBoomergirl Fashionista tip 1: When I find an article of clothing that I like and that fits well, I purchase it in a variety of colors. And I don’t wait too long to buy that second or third color, as these days I find stores and online websites sell out quickly and keep little inventory. Plus they very rarely restock the same exact product. BTW I also have the cotton knit blazer in black and leopard print.
I went camouflage with #styleyourmask
JudiBoomergirl Fashionista tip 2: For all those like me who must wear progressives, I consider eyeglasses to be a very important accessory since it’s worn on the face. Eyewear also makes a fashion statement. Hence, I have a few different pairs of eyewear to match different outfits. Again, when I find a frame I like I buy it in different colors. For example, I have a blue tortoise pair that I wear with navy and summer hues and a black pair that goes with all my other garments. (I know that eyeglasses fog up with mask so I’ll give you a bonus fashionista tip, go buy some Eyebobs Fog Free Lens Cleaner. It works great!)

try to find comfortable ones
Comfort is most important.
I love wearing masks that match my outfit, it’s really fun! My tip would be for any other glasses wearers out there, masks with adjustable nose wires are super useful.
Theta, I’ll have to look for masks with adjustable nose wires. I do find that the masks with the wires hold tighter. But I like the defogger spray to prevent my glasses from fogging up inside.
I have tried all different types of masks and styles to find the most comfortable style for me that I can wear and not feel bothered by it.
Linda, I know it’s challenging to find masks that fit the face sometimes and don’t leave gaps. I tend to like the clothe masks by Vera Bradley with adjustable ties.
I love to color coordinate my masks
Livivua, color matching masks is fun to do.
I have been used to wearing masks for a while now. They don’t bother me at all anymore.
Elle, glad you don’t find issues with mask wearing, especially since I think it will be an accessory for a long time.
I have become very used to wearing a mask and currently have a large collection. I have a silver sparkly one I love that matches with everything. I also have multiple different animal print ones that are super fun too.
Felicia, silver is a great because it’s neutral and matches with a variety of other colors. I like silver with purple, black or blue clothing. I also like silver shoes or flats or sandals.
I have several masks and just try to match colors. I also have a plain white one that seems to go with everything.
Dawn, I also think white is nice especially for summer outfits.
I have several masks and I like to wear a black one with my nice clothes and a medical one with my other clothes.
Heather, I like the idea of a black mask. It goes with all different colors.
Right now I’ve been into accessorizing the mask! I found these super cute facemask cases at Claire’s for my daughter, so I decided to make one for myself too! They are a great way to keep a fresh mask in your bag nice and clean. That’s my favorite style: fresh and clean! The reusable ones can get pretty dirty very fast.
Athena, I’ll have to check out the mask cases. Sounds like a good accessory.
I don’t really style my mask. I just wear what I have whether it matches or not.
That’s okay. Glad you are wearing your mask.
I style the masks that I wear with different outfits to match.
Cassandra, that’s a great way to be a fashionista.
