You May Be Getting Older, But You Can Still Have Fun!

This post is sponsored by Warner Bros. Pictures. All opinions are my own.

Since turning 50 my philosophy has been that while I may be getting older, I can still have fun. That’s why when the PR team at Warner Brothers contacted me about writing about this topic, I said “absolutely.” It’s one of the key themes of their new movie, Going In Style, which will premiere in theaters on April 7th.

Going In Style
The new comedy stars some of my favorite Oscar-winning actors, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine and Alan Arkin. They play lifelong buddies Willie, Joe and Al, who decide to buck retirement and step off the straight-and-narrow for the first time in their lives when their pension fund becomes a corporate casualty.

Going in Style; #GoingInStyle;

Desperate to pay the bills and come through for their loved ones, the three risk it all by embarking on a daring bid to knock off the very bank that absconded with their money.

Ann Margaret, who BTW is 75 years old, plays Al’s love interest. She looks amazing and her voice is just as lovely as when she was a teenager in Bye, Bye Birdie. The director of Going in Style is actor, director, and screenwriter Zach Braff (who starred in the television series Scrubs and was born and bred in New Jersey).

“Boomer Reinvention: How To Create Your Dream Career Over 50”

life after 50, baby boomer women, boomer womenEver since I’ve been on Twitter, @johntarnoff has been following me. He retweets my blog post almost every week. Who is this nice person, I wondered? I clicked on his Twitter handle and saw that he has more than 97,000 followers and is a super handsome, sixty-something, former Hollywood entertainment executive.

Wow-o-wow!

John Tarnoff is also a very smart reinvention career coach, speaker and writer for baby boomers. He holds a B.A. magna-cum-laude from Amherst College, and a M.A. in Spiritual Psychology from the University of Santa Monica. He grew up in New York and Paris, and lives in Los Angeles. (All my favorite places,  another reason why I like him.)

John Tarnoff is author of “Boomer Reinvention.”

John has been reinventing himself for much of his forty-year career. In fact, he has just written a book called Boomer Reinvention: How To Create Your Dream Career Over 50. His publicist sent a copy to me. The book won high praise from noteworthy boomers such as Arianna Huffington, CEO and Founder of Thrive Global; Ken Burns, filmmaker; and Richard Eisenberg, Nextavenue.org, so I am pleased to share some highlights with you. (Note: Be sure to enter my Rafflecopter Giveaway below to win a copy!)

Statistics Set The Stage For Second-Acts
According to the 2014 Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies, 65% of baby boomers working plan to work past age 65 or do not plan to retire. And 68% of Americans age 50-64 are worried about not having enough for retirement. (Gallup, April 2014). “Yikes,” says John. “Most boomers will have to work through their 60s and many even into their 70s. But that’s why I wrote Boomer Reinvention — to help boomers create sustainable second-act careers that are appropriate, authentic, meaningful and purposeful.” Continue reading

Be Inspired: This Boomer Girl Designs Activewear For Post 50 Women

life after 50, baby boomer women, boomer womenIt’s Women’s History Month and March 8th is International Woman’s Day. According to Women@Forbes, economists and academics agree women entrepreneurs are an under-tapped force that can rekindle economic expansion. In fact, based on the 2012 U.S. Census, women own 36% of all businesses,  ‒ a jump of 30% over 2007.

This week, I’m delighted to feature an interview with a post 60 female entrepreneur from San Diego (who I might add was originally from New Jersey). Her name is Jacqueline Hook and she is the creator of Tenáz Athletics. A 62-year-old fitness fanatic (and mother to three grown children and grandmother to five), Jacqui has emerged from years of chronic back pain to enjoy all  manner of physical activity, from surfing to yoga to flying trapeze. She has run two full marathons and 13 half-marathons, all in her fifties and sixties, and recently set state and national records for powerlifting. No wonder she started an activewear company!

Jacqueline Hook started an activewear company during her life after 60.

Enjoy our conversation. Hope you will be inspired by Jacqui’s story.

Q: What prompted you to start a new business during your life post 60?
Jacqui: “I was prompted by a feeling that had been gnawing at me for months. Last year I had reached 25 years at my corporate job— wonderful company, awesome people, great leadership—but the work wasn’t getting my creative juices flowing anymore. I remember this particular day when I was working from home, gazing out the window and sighing, when it occurred to me that I was craving the energized feeling I get when I’m in a creative flow. It was like needing air to breathe. Then it hit me, this idea of starting a business. In that moment I made the decision, like flipping a switch, and I perked up with excitement.” Continue reading

Learning How To Browse and Binge In A Great Big TV World

I’m pleased to be working with Comcast on this sponsored post. All opinions are my own.

life after 50, baby boomer women, boomer womenI remember when I was growing up in the Bronx, NY, and my family used to watch TV shows on a small black and white (and eventually color) television. Back in the 1960s there were primarily three networks ABC, CBS, and NBC. My dad would watch the evening news and then we would watch variety shows with hosts like Dean Martin, Carol Burnett, and Ed Sullivan. (The cute mouse puppet Topo Gigio was my favorite guest.)

(Note: If you cannot see the video of Topo Gigio on The Ed Sullivan Show, click here.)

Rarely would there be an evening where we would watch with ease. There was no remote so either I or my sister would get up off the couch to change the station. Oftentimes the picture would start flipping – yes, just flipping around. My mom would adjust the antenna atop the television, moving it in one direction or another to see if she could stop the flip. Or she might wrap the antenna in aluminum foil to improve connectivity. Sometimes it worked, other times it proved futile.

A Great Big TV World
Wow-o-wow has life changed since I was a kid. Now there are hundreds of networks, multiple streaming services, and content can be viewed on computers, tablets and mobile phones.  Plus with my Comcast X1 Xfinity subscription, for which I pay a hefty price, I can: Continue reading

Janes Wellness Gowns Cover With Comfort For The Medical Journey

life after 50, baby boomer women, boomer wellness“My note is to tell you about Janes Wellness Gowns, something wonderful, that offers women over 50 comfort, style, and dignity when they need it most,” wrote Sharon Linder, the founder of GetJanes.

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Since October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I thought I would take Sharon up on her offer to showcase her social entrepreneurial efforts that help women during their medical journey. (And offer a giveaway for a Janes, see below!)

It’s also an approrpriate time to remind you, dear reader, to make your appointment (if you haven’t had one) for your yearly mammogram. Boomer women are often caregivers to others, yet when it comes to nurturing themselves – they tend to let it fall to the bottom of the list. Am I right? Admit it! Last week, I wrote about getting a bone density scan to help take care of your bone health. That’s important too.

Your Post 50 Feet Will Love These Comfortable Shoes

life after 50, baby boomer women, boomer womenIt was around the time I reached my late 40s that I started having issues with shoes. Before then, I couldn’t wait for Lord & Taylor to have their fall sale. Each year, I would race to the store to pick out three pairs so I could get 30% off. Sometimes I would buy more than three. My closet racks were filled with shoes.

As I approached my early 50s, finding shoes to fit proved more difficult. I went from heels to ballet flats. In the winter I wore Uggs for casual wear and high black leather boots when I was going to the office.

When I retired from my full-time job I started doing lots of yoga without shoes or socks.

I have flat feet from aging and going barefoot so much during my life after 50.

A Visit To The Podiatrist
“I used to be able to walk all over New York City, from the Brooklyn Bridge to Central Park and now my feet hurt after a short distance,” I told the podiatrist during my appointment last winter. “You have flat feet,” said Dr. L. “Your arches can flatten out as you age, especially if you are going barefoot all the time. You need more supportive shoes.” He also recommended orthotics.

The Hunt For Comfortable Cold Weather Shoes
I bought Dr. Scholl’s orthotic inserts which worked well in my sneakers. But I couldn’t find comfortable shoes. That’s when I turned to SAS also know as San Antonio Shoemakers. I went to the shoe store in town where I used to take my kids when they were toddlers. Unlike many department stores, the saleswoman measured my feet and brought out several pairs of shoes. I felt like Goldilocks.

“This pair is too tight,” I said about the first shoes I tried on.
“This pair is too lose,” I said about the second.
“I have narrow heels. My foot is slipping out of this pair,” I said about the third.
“The arch is too high in this shoe,” I said about the fourth.

I wore my SAS Freetime shoes with jeans to the NY NOW Show in NYC this winter.

Finally after trying on about 15 different shoes, the saleswoman brought out a pair of SAS shoes — the Freetime style, with a removable, cushioned foot bed and a soft sole for shock absorption. I have to admit that they weren’t the most glamorous shoes I ever owned but my feet felt like they were walking on a cloud. I wore them all winter with jeans, leggings, even tights and a skirt and was able to walk all over NYC on multiple occasions. My feet were so happy and my boyfriend L said I looked cool in my Freetime black Nubuck shoes, like a fashionable hipster.

Not Just Your Nana’s and Papa’s Shoes
As the weather warmed up, I had a new dilemma. I couldn’t  wear my Freetime black Nubuck shoes during the summer months. Oh no, oh no, oh no – not another search for shoes!

Then I saw an ad on Facebook. It featured a new stylish collection of SAS shoes. Could it be possible that the same company that inspired an ardent customer-base of elderly nanas and papas was now targeting boomer women? I was so excited.

I quickly contacted the marketing team and told them I would love to learn more about their 40th anniversary line. The nice marketing manager offered to send a pair of their casual shoes to me in collaboration for a blog post.* (Did I say I love being a blogger? I do! I do!)

I wore my Breezy shoes to the shore.

I picked out the Breezy casual with genuine moccasin construction in trendy Periwinkle. I liked that these shoes had side perforations to vent heat, and a foam foot bed topped with striped microfiber for all-day comfort. I bought a size 8 so I could add my orthotics. Continue reading

“Absolutely Fabulous – The Movie” Is Fabulous, Fashionable, and Fun

This post is made possible by support from Fox Searchlight Pictures. All opinions are my own.

life after 50, baby boomer women, boomer womenThe crowd cheered as Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley, the stars of Absolutely Fabulous – The Movie, walked into the Chelsea Bowtie theatre in New York City on Tuesday evening for an advance screening of their new film. Not knowing much about the British series of the same name, I was eager to learn more about their characters Edina and Patsy. Edina runs a PR agency and Patsy is a magazine editor.

An Hilarious Twosome
My friend J and I quickly became Edina and Patsy fans, laughing our way through the hilarious twosomes shopping, drinking, clubbing, and escapades around London’s trendiest hotspots. The two are post 60 women with attitude and not afraid to pop themselves with Botox, wear outlandish designer outfits, and say whatever they feel like saying, whenever they feel like saying it. Maybe that’s why I found myself cheering on this dynamic duo for the entire 90 minutes. Having worked in PR for most of my previous career, I could empathize with Edina’s and Patsy’s outrageous behavior to win a prized client or placement.

Penniless, they escape to the French Riviera, planning a way to make their stay there permanent so they can live the high life forever. Continue reading

My Foodie Favorites At The 2016 Fancy Food Show

life after 50, baby boomer women, boomer women

A few weeks ago, I went to the 2016 Summer Fancy Food Show at the Javits Center NYC. As a post 50 foodie, I gravitate toward wellness trends. In my mind that includes dark chocolate (which BTW is supposedly filled with healthful benefits) and frozen treats (Okay some were low fat ice pops. However, I couldn’t resist the full fat ice cream too. Boomer girls gotta live a little.)

“Judi The Foodie” Shares Food Trends
After sipping and nibbling my way through 363,000 square feet filled with 2670 exhibiting companies (I clocked 6+ miles in my comfy Breezy shoes provided by SAS Shoemakers), I’m pleased to share some of the food trends and favorites from the show. You may find these products in your local supermarket. If not check Whole Foods, Amazon, or online links provided.

BEVERAGES
♥ Tons of Teas:
According to The Tea Association of the U.S.A., tea is the most widely consumed beverage in the world next to water. No wonder there were many cold-brewed and hot varieties. I drank:
* Thea’s English Standard Tea, the proper iced tea, sugar-free, sweetener-free, and calorie-free — the Wonderberry flavor is decaf.
* ASI Tea, brewed from Wild Picked American Yaupon Leaves, the only significant native source of caffeine in North America. (I try to stay caffeine-free, but there are many high caffeine products out there.)
* SenCha Green Tea + C, sugar-free with natural vitamin C. They offer Green Tea mints and  Matcha Powder. Numi organic Tumeric teas were available. Turmeric is a BIG trend in wellness.
*CHAM cold-brewed wellness teas, which claim to calm, revitalize and provide defense.
* Tea Forte TEA OVER ICE Steeping Tea Pitcher — a neat idea that looked pretty.

A few days later, I was invited to attend a blogger event in Lawrenceville, NJ, put on by Comcast to introduce their Xfinity stores. I was eager to learn more about the Xfinity services, especially since I am a long-time customer who is paying a lot for many of these services and not utilizing them to the fullest.
