How To Keep Your Post 50 Skin Happy and Hydrated

“Your skin looks good. It’s nice and hydrated,” said my esthetician D when I visited for a facial. “What are you using on your face?”

I was glad to hear that my skin wasn’t as dry as the last time. Now that I’m post-menopausal my entire body often feels like its parched from head to toe. My eyes are so dry, including my corneas, that my opthamologist prescribed eye drops for morning and evening.

Being of a certain age, I am always looking for the next great ingredient or beauty product that is going to keep my post 50 skin happy and hydrated.

DRUM ROLL PLEASE, I think I may have found it!

“I would love for you to try our PEAK 10 SKIN® products. We are of a similar age, 58 for me, and while our products are perfect for any age, they are especially effective in dry climate or for maturing skin. Our brand is focused on healthy, hydrated skin. We believe aging is a gift to be enjoyed” said founder Connie Elder.

Connie asked me about my skin (which is very dry) and then recommended a few PEAK 10 SKIN® products. I tried Hydro 1000, Lipid Defense, Eye Work and the WORKS.* All contain a secret ingredient called Hyaluronic Acid. I’ve been using Connie’s products for about six weeks now and as you heard from my esthetician, beyond my daily water consumption, these products are working. I like this skin care line. It is very light on the skin and you only need a dab of each product for the entire face and neck.

Last week I shared highlights about my post 50 beauty makeover. It was a fun experience. Hope you find Lorraine’s advice helpful.

Q: What are the most important skin care treatments for a post 50 woman?
L: “The three most important skin care treatments that women over the age of 50 can use to delay the signs of aging are either a restorative and or reparative eye cream, neck cream, and hand cream (the hand cream should specifically have an SPF in it ) to help avoid those dark spots or hyper-pigmentation from surfacing. These are the areas of the face and body that show the first visible signs of aging. A serum and moisturizer (with SPF) on the face are just as important to enhance a more youthful radiant appearance to the skin.” Continue reading

It’s Time For My Beautiful Post 50 Beauty Makeover

boomer beauty, life after 50, makeup for 50+ women, over 50A few months ago, I decided it was time for a post 50 beauty makeover. It was initiated during the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale in July when I bought a Laura Mercier makeup palette and a new set of Bobbie Brown makeup brushes. I never owned a nice set of brushes. It was an important investment for my life after 50.

I brought my purchases home and put them in my vanity. I loved the brushes and the colors of the makeup, only I didn’t know how to use them or how to apply the makeup. I was excited when I heard that my local Nordstrom has a beauty stylist, Lorraine Parker, who provides complimentary makeovers. I quickly called Lorraine and set up an appointment. I told Lorraine that based on the trends I wanted to air on the side of less makeup, not more.

Wow-o-wow! What an education I got in the span of an hour. Lorraine took me through multiple steps. I didn’t buy all the beauty products she suggested, but it was a really enjoyable afternoon. I told my boyfriend L that it is very expensive to maintain a beauty regimen post 50. He smiled.

My Magical Makeover

First, Lorraine used Clarins Cleansing and Toner Serum to clean my face, plus Clarins Moisturizer and Eye Cream as a base. She recommends Clarins for post 50 women. I liked the products. Next, came a primer for my face and a foundation. Lorraine used a Nars under-eye concealer and a Laura Mercier primer for the lids. Continue reading

Stylish and Safe Ways to Protect Skin From the Sun

boomer beauty, life after 50, makeup for 50+ women, over 50“Your skin looks good,” said Dr. A at my recent checkup.  “Unless you see any other odd spots, I don’t need to see you for a year.” He did take off a small mole on my tummy that was irritated but didn’t think it was pre-cancerous. Good thing I don’t wear bikinis anymore.

Since my mom had surgery for melanoma when she was post 50, I’m very conscientious  about my visits to the dermatologist and staying safe in the sun. Growing up in the 60s, there wasn’t as much focus on sun protection. My mom worshiped the sun and usually had a deep Ban de Soliel tan every summer. I had a deep tan too and now I’m paying for the beach days of my youth with lots of wrinkles and dark spots on my face.

A Sun Protective Clothing Line
In addition to lathering on SPF creams and sprays, now there is protective fashion made with fabrics that block the skin from harmful UVA/UVB rays. I had a chance to try some styles from the Sundriven® brand and really like them. The founder Mitzi Runyan is from California and shared more details on why she developed the line and its benefits.

Mitzi Runyan is founder of Sundriven Age-Defying UV Wear.

“From my early time as a makeup artist for top luxury brands to more recent years in the Beverly Hills medical spa industry, one question was asked again and again: How old do I look?” said Mitzi. “While I did everything possible to help hide the aging on their face, the sun damage on their hands always gave away their true age. And no matter what I did, the sun would cause their wrinkles and lines to reappear.”

After her grandparents were diagnosed with melanoma, she decided to change her outdoor habits and find a way to enable women of all ages to embrace the outdoors while looking stylish and staying safe.

“I came to the conclusion that women need something new to protect them from UV rays year round: A highly fashionable, extremely effective line of products to protect their skin from sun damage and aging. Thus, the Sundriven® brand was born,” said Mitzi. Continue reading

Benefits of Being A Woman of “The Perfect Age”

life after 50, over 50, retirement, baby boomer women, baby boomersGood Housekeeping and L’Oréal are hosting a “50 Over 50” luncheon with a celebrity panel at Hearst Tower in New York City and would love for you to attend” said the invitation earlier this month. The event was held to honor 50 accomplished women who were selected for being at the top of their game during their life after 50 and for their positive attitude about aging. It was fitting that this program happened the same day that a woman clinched the Democratic nomination for President of the United States. (Go Hillary! #IAmWithHer)

A Panel Of Post 50 Celebs
The star-studded panel included:

Marlo Thomas – I have always adored Marlo, ever since the 60s when she was an aspiring actress in That Girl. Do you remember how her character Annemarie moved from her hometown of Brewster, New York to NYC? I so wanted to be just like Annemarie. I also admire Marlo’s philanthropic and activist work.

Carole Radziwill, author and TV personality – “I love Carole,” said my daughter A, who is a fan of The Real Housewives of New York City. While Carole appears in this hit Bravo reality show, it is her previous career as a TV journalist and producer that interested me. I was equally moved by her story of widowhood at a young age. After losing her husband ABC News producer Anthony Radizwill to cancer, she wrote a memoir, What Remains, and a novel, The Widow’s Guide to Sex & Dating. I definitely want to read both.

Helpful Skin Care Tips When The Chill Is On

boomer beauty, life after 50, makeup for 50+ women, over 50It’s finally getting chilly outside and the heat is starting to kick in. You know what that means! My aging skin is going to dry out and more wrinkles are going to sink in. Just the other day I noticed another two vertical wrinkles above my third eye – not a pretty sight. My hands are showing signs of aging too.

The rest of my post 50 body also gets super dry during the cold weather months. Having dealt with eczema since I was a child, I responded with a ‘yes’ when the PR team at CVS asked if I wanted to try their new line of CVS Borage Seed Oil Eczema skin care products. “I have the package in the mail for your Winter Skin Essentials and wanted to share some additional information on the products,” said the assistant account executive S.*

According to the experts at CVS, I am one of many in the U.S. who have eczema — 31.6 million others suffer along with me and at least 17.8 million people have moderate to severe eczema or atopic dermatitis. I was curious to learn more about Borage Seed Oil and these specialized products.

The Story of Borage Seed Oil
Known for its moisturizing properties, the borage herb (borago officinalis) grows wild throughout the Mediterranean. Borage seed oil is rich in the skin-nourishing fatty acid gamma linolenic acid (GLA) and has been used for centuries to help soothe and calm skin discomforts like dryness, itchiness, and redness.

Simple Ways To Stay “Skin Smart” In The Sun

boomer beauty, life after 50, makeup for 50+ women, over 50I’m gearing up for summer. Bright sunshine is a welcome relief after the cold and snowy winter. My boots are packed away and now it’s time for swimsuits and shorts.

I love being outdoors, especially at the beach. I have fond memories of going to Long Beach, N.Y. My family rented a flat there each July and August. Who knew from SPF during the 60s? My mom used to slather greasy orange Ban d’Soleil over her body and my dad’s too. Sometimes my sister N would sit with a metallic reflector near her face to catch more rays.

I have great memories of my summers at Long Beach, N.Y.

Sadly, later in life my mom ended up with melanoma and had to have surgery on her leg. That’s why I try to cover up when in the sun and wear sunscreen with SPF 50+, especially on my face. I also get regular checkups at the dermatologist. Continue reading

Skin Fitness For Women Post 50

boomer beauty, life after 50, makeup for 50+ women, over 50Whenever I’m asked to try new skin care products, I usually say “yes.” In fact, if you looked in my bathroom cabinets since I’ve been blogging, you would find dozens of skin care samples.

During my life after 50, I’ve been on a mission to find a magical cure that might ultimately keep my face and neck forever wrinkle-free. It’s challenging to always keep my chin up, especially during days when I’m lacking sleep.

Created for Women 50+
Last spring, I was invited to try Truist™, a new line specifically created for women over 50.* The skin creams are manufactured by Kimberly Clark, a company that says “it knows first-hand about putting ingredients next to skin.” KC is the creator of Huggies diapers. My boyfriend L likes to say that my skin feels as soft as a baby’s skin when I come home from a visit to my esthetician. Is it possible to create this same softness with at-home products? I wondered if Truist™ might provide the answers.

Expert Beauty Tips For Women 50 Plus

boomer beauty, life after 50, makeup for 50+ women, over 50I was excited to review the new beauty book Toss the Gloss by Andrea Q. Robinson. Andrea’s illustrious career spans more than forty years, with chief roles at Estee Lauder, Tom Ford Beauty, Ralph Lauren Fragrances and  editorial at Seventeen, Vogue and Mademoiselle.

Since I’m trying to age gracefully I was eager to read Andrea’s “beauty tips, tricks and truths” for women 50 plus. The guide is overflowing with practical information for boomer girls.

Andrea Robinson, Toss the Gloss

Andrea Q. Robinson is the author of "Toss the Gloss."

I like Andrea’s friendly attitude about beauty and her book’s conversational tone. At times I felt like I was chatting with an old friend who happened to be a makeup maven. According to Andrea: “The right makeup, used the right way, is the most powerful weapon in your beauty arsenal. Good makeup reclaims you. Not youth.”

Andrea says that “letting go of perfection and embracing your flaws makes you more beautiful, more noticeable, more accessible, more real.” (I agree Andrea. I agree.)
Andrea laments that “fear of change is for old ladies.” She says to “look in the mirror and decide if your makeup routine is still working.” (I did this a year ago when I retired from my full time job. I totally slimmed down and most days use very little eye makeup.)
Andrea advises that “makeup routines for women 50 plus should be effortless – not more than 10 minutes.” (That’s about the time it takes me each morning to finish my face. Well, perhaps 15 minutes. How about you?)
Andrea says that “you don’t need to spend a lot of money to look good. Maybe a few pricey pieces but the rest can be bought at the drugstore.” (I do like my Bobbi Brown eyeshadows, blush and lipstick, and prefer Lancome Hypnose Drama mascara. As for moisturizers, I often purchase these skin care items at places like Ulta, Target or CVS.)
